The Exotic Shorthair is a pedigree domestic cat breed celebrated for its plush, dense coat and the iconic round face and body inherited from Persian ancestry, offering Persian-like charm with easy-care grooming.
The Exotic Shorthair originated in the United States during the late 1950s and early 1960s, born from a deliberate cross between American Shorthairs and Persians. Breeders sought to blend the Persian’s gentle temperament and distinctive appearance with a short, manageable coat. Russian Blue and Burmese lines were later added to enhance coat texture and color diversity. The breed achieved championship status with the Cat Fanciers’ Association in 1967 and is now recognized by all major cat registries worldwide.
Classified within the domestic cat species Felis catus, the Exotic Shorthair is a recognized breed distinguished by its unique combination of Persian features and a short, plush coat. It belongs to the shorthair group and is often described as the 'shorthaired Persian,' with breed standards nearly identical to the Persian except for coat length.
Exotic Shorthairs are medium-to-large cats with a cobby, muscular build, broad chest, and short, sturdy legs. Their hallmark is a luxuriously dense, 'pelted' coat that stands away from the body, offering a soft, plush feel. The breed displays a round head, flat (brachycephalic) face, large expressive eyes, and small, rounded ears. Their overall look is one of gentle roundness and plush comfort, echoing the Persian’s silhouette but with a more practical coat.
Exotic Shorthairs are cherished as companion animals, valued for their affectionate and placid nature. Adaptable to indoor living, they thrive in homes as gentle, loving pets. Their easy-going temperament and low-maintenance grooming needs make them popular among families and cat enthusiasts. The breed is also a favorite in cat shows, admired for its Persian-like appearance and manageable coat.

Buy ShirtKnown as the 'shorthaired Persian,' the Exotic Shorthair has become a symbol of comfort and elegance in the cat fancy world. Its plush appearance and sweet demeanor have made it a beloved breed in popular culture, frequently featured in cat shows and admired by enthusiasts who seek the Persian’s beauty with easier care. The breed’s gentle expression and round features often evoke a sense of warmth and tranquility in art and media.
Exotic Shorthairs are renowned for their affectionate, placid, and gentle disposition. They are typically calm, tolerant, and enjoy spending time with their humans, making them ideal indoor companions. Their easy-going personality means they adapt well to various household environments and are content lounging or quietly playing. They are less vocal than some breeds, preferring to communicate with soft meows and expressive eyes.
Exotic Shorthairs generally live 12–15 years. While robust, they can inherit health issues from their Persian lineage, including brachycephalic airway syndrome, tear duct overflow, and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Regular veterinary checkups and responsible breeding practices help manage these risks and support a healthy, happy life.
Thanks to their short, plush coat, Exotic Shorthairs require less grooming than Persians. Weekly brushing helps maintain coat health and reduces shedding. Routine care should include regular eye cleaning, as their flat faces can lead to tear overflow, and attention to dental hygiene. They thrive in indoor environments and benefit from gentle play and affection.
Exotic Shorthairs display all colors and patterns accepted for Persians, including solid hues, tabby, bicolor, calico, and more. Their coat can range from classic black, white, and blue to intricate patterns like tortoiseshell and colorpoint, complemented by large, expressive eyes that vary with coat color.
While no single Exotic Shorthair has dominated popular culture, the breed’s distinctive look has made it a favorite in cat shows and advertising. Their plush, expressive faces are often featured in media and promotional materials, embodying the ideal of feline comfort and charm.
In some regions and registries, the breed is listed simply as 'Exotic' or 'Exotic Cat.' The breed standard remains nearly identical to the Persian, with the primary distinction being the short coat. There are no major subtypes, but minor naming conventions may vary internationally.
